What Is Esse Skincare?
Esse is a professional skincare brand built on two things that rarely travel together: certified organic formulation and serious microbiome science. It is certified organic by Ecocert against the COSMOS standard, accredited vegan and cruelty-free, and formulated with prebiotics, probiotics and organically farmed active ingredients.
The range was developed in South Africa around organically grown African plant extracts, including marula, baobab and jojoba, and is now used in more than 40 countries. Esse sells through trained practitioners rather than mass retail, which is why you will not find it on a pharmacy shelf.
At Luxe, Esse is the line behind our organic and probiotic facials. We work with these products every week, which is a different thing from having read the label.
What Certified Organic Actually Means
Anyone can print the word organic on a box. Almost nobody will tell you what it cost them to be allowed to. Here is what Esse's certification actually requires, and how it is checked.
95% of the plant ingredients must be organic
This is the number that actually matters, and the one most brands never mention. Under COSMOS Organic, at least 95% of the physically processed agricultural ingredients in a formulation must come from certified organic farming. That covers the plant oils, butters, extracts and essential oils that do the work in the bottle.
Water is not organic, and no standard pretends otherwise
Water and minerals cannot be certified organic, because they are not farmed. This is why COSMOS sets a whole-product organic minimum rather than expecting 100%. A water-based mist and an oil-based serum will show very different organic percentages. That gap is arithmetic, not quality.
An enforced list of what cannot go in
COSMOS Organic prohibits parabens, silicones, synthetic fragrances, GMOs and petrochemical-derived ingredients outright. Certification is not a matter of hitting a percentage and printing a leaf on the box. A formulation either complies in full or it does not certify.
Audited on site, then audited again every year
Certification takes a documentary review followed by an on-site audit of composition, processing and packaging. It is not a one-time badge. Certified producers are re-audited annually to keep it, and unannounced visits sit within the continuous audit plan. This is the part clients ask about least and should ask about most.
The percentage goes on the product, by rule
Certified products are required to display their organic percentage rather than just the word. That is a deliberate design choice: COSMOS was created by European certification bodies specifically to counter greenwashing in cosmetics, and the labeling rules exist to make vague claims harder to make.
Certified by a body that does not sell skincare
Ecocert has been certifying organic products since 1991 and operates across more than 150 countries. The point of third-party certification is that the organization checking the claim has no stake in the product selling. A brand cannot certify itself, which is precisely what makes it worth something.
If a brand will not tell you what percentage of a product is organic, the percentage is usually the reason. Esse prints it. Ask us to show you on any product in the studio.

The range covers a full routine. What you actually need is usually less than you think, and we would rather build you a short routine you follow than a long one you abandon.
Organic Cleansers
Where a routine either works or quietly falls apart. Gentle, non-stripping cleansers formulated to remove buildup and makeup without taking your skin barrier with them.
Toners & Mists
Light hydrating steps between cleansing and moisturizing. Water-based by design, which is exactly why their whole-product organic percentage reads lower than an oil. The plant content inside is still held to the same organic requirement.
Serums
The most concentrated step, and where Esse's probiotic work is most visible. Oil-based serums carry some of the highest organic percentages in the range, because there is little water in them to dilute the number.
Moisturizers
Formulated to support barrier function rather than sit on top of the skin. Weights run from light to rich. Picking the right one matters more than most people expect.
Masks
Weekly treatment steps rather than daily ones. Commonly chosen for a targeted reset, whether that is drawing out congestion, calming reactivity or adding a hydration boost before an event.
Exfoliators
Gentle resurfacing, for use in moderation. Over-exfoliation is one of the most common reasons skin turns reactive, so this is the category we would most encourage you to get guidance on before buying.
Eye Care
Targeted formulations for the thinner, more delicate skin around the eyes. Commonly chosen for the appearance of dryness, puffiness and early fine lines.
Organic Facial Oils
Built around African plant extracts including marula, baobab and jojoba, grown organically and cold processed. These are the products where the organic certification is doing the most visible work.

Esse also makes a professional range formulated for in-studio use by trained practitioners. Those products are not sold for home use, by us or by anyone else. If you liked something specific from your facial, ask your esthetician and we will point you to the retail equivalent, or explain honestly why there is not one.
What Is BIOME+?
Most brands using the word probiotic are not putting live cultures in the bottle. Esse publishes a BIOME+ level on its formulations so you can see what a product actually does to your skin's microbiome rather than taking the front label's word for it.
It is the same instinct as the organic percentage. Print the number, let people check it. Higher is not automatically better: a level 4 product is not the right starting point for everyone, and the levels are designed to work together rather than compete.
